Starting Your Driving Lessons
Thinking about learning to drive? Getting started is easier than you might think.
When can I start driving lessons?
You can start learning to drive from age 17 (or 16 if you receive the higher rate of the mobility component of PIP).
As soon as you have a valid UK provisional driving licence, you’re good to go.
Many learners choose to begin lessons as soon as their provisional arrives, even if their theory test is still a little way off.
Applying for a provisional licence
Before your first lesson, you’ll need to apply for a provisional driving licence. You can do this online through the DVLA, and it usually takes just a couple of weeks to arrive.
To apply, you’ll need:
Proof of identity (such as a UK passport)
Your National Insurance number (if you have one)
A UK address
Once your provisional licence arrives, you can legally start taking professional driving lessons with a qualified instructor.
